Getting Ready for Your New Shed: A Raymond Homeowner's Guide

So, you've decided on a new shed. Great choice! Whether it's for tools, hobbies, or just getting some clutter out of the garage, a good shed makes a big difference. But getting that shed from our shop to your backyard isn't just magic. There's a process, and knowing what to expect can save you a lot of headaches, time, and even money. I've been doing this a while at Custom Sheds of Raymond, and I've seen it all. Let me walk you through it.

The Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

First off, let's talk about how long this whole thing takes. It's not an instant gratification kind of deal, especially if you're going custom. Here's a rough breakdown:

  • Initial Consultation & Design: This could be a few days to a couple of weeks. It depends on how quickly we nail down the design, size, features, and get the quote approved. Sometimes folks know exactly what they want; other times, we go back and forth a bit.
  • Permitting (if needed): This is the big variable. In Pacific County, if your shed is over 200 square feet, you'll need a permit. That process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the county's workload and how complete your application is. Don't skip this step – it'll bite you later.
  • Construction/Build Time: Once we have the green light (and permit, if applicable), our build time for a standard shed is usually 2-4 weeks. For larger or more complex custom builds, it might stretch to 4-6 weeks. We build these right here in our shop, so weather usually isn't a factor until delivery day.
  • Delivery & Installation: This is the fun part! Once the shed's built, we schedule delivery. Installation on site usually takes one day, sometimes two for bigger structures, depending on site prep.

All told, from your first call to a finished shed in your yard, you're usually looking at anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months. Plan ahead, especially if you have a specific deadline in mind.

Preparing Your Site: Don't Skimp on This

This is probably the most crucial part on your end. A shed needs a solid, level foundation. We can't just drop a shed on a bumpy, sloped patch of grass and expect it to last. Here's what you need to think about:

  • Clear the Area: Remove any bushes, trees, stumps, rocks, or debris from where the shed will sit. Give us at least an extra foot or two around the perimeter for working space.
  • Level Ground: This is non-negotiable. The site needs to be as level as possible. We're talking within a couple of inches across the entire footprint. If it's not, your shed doors won't close right, the floor could warp, and you'll have bigger problems down the line. We can help with some minor leveling, but significant grading is your responsibility or a separate contractor's.
  • Foundation Material: Most folks opt for a gravel pad. It drains well, which is super important in our wet Raymond climate. A 4-6 inch deep gravel pad, compacted, is ideal. Some prefer concrete slabs, which are great but cost more and require more planning. We can install on either, but the prep work for either is on you.
  • Access: How are we getting the shed back there? Our delivery truck and trailer need a clear path. Think about overhead wires, low-hanging branches, narrow gates, or soft spots in your lawn. If we can't get our equipment in, we can't deliver. Sometimes we use a shed mule, but even that needs decent clearance.
  • Utilities: Mark any underground sprinkler lines, septic systems, or electrical conduits. You really don't want us accidentally hitting those.

What to Ask Before You Sign on the Dotted Line

Before you commit to any shed builder, ask these questions. It'll give you peace of mind and make sure there are no surprises.

  • What's included in the price? Does it cover delivery, installation, and any site prep they might do? Are there hidden fees?
  • Who is responsible for permits? Some builders handle this; others expect you to. Make sure it's clear.
  • What's the warranty? On the structure, on the roof, on the workmanship? How long does it last?
  • What kind of foundation do you recommend for my specific site? A good builder will have an opinion based on your yard conditions.
  • What's your typical lead time from contract signing to delivery? Get a realistic timeframe.
  • What are your payment terms? When are deposits due? When's the final payment?
  • Can I see examples of your work? Photos are good, but if they have a local shed you can look at, even better.
  • What happens if the site isn't ready on delivery day? Understand their policy for rescheduling and potential fees.

Getting a new shed is exciting, and it should be a smooth process. By understanding the timeline, doing your homework on site prep, and asking the right questions, you'll ensure your new shed from Custom Sheds of Raymond is a perfect fit for your property and serves you well for years to come.
